Tipat Mazal

A drop of luck.

On October 1st, 2024, Yael and I got married, on the very same day that Iran launched a missile attack on Israel.

This surreal overlap between intimacy and catastrophe became the starting point for a risograph-printed booklet that blends illustration and storytelling into a fragmented documentary form. Wedding photographs, children’s war drawings and intimate text, based on conversations I recorded with Yael, are woven into a narrative that balances celebration and catastrophe, hope and fear.

The booklet’s pink risograph cover: the hand-lettered title, a plane and falling missiles, and a bride’s shadow behind a road barrier
Spread: the hand-lettered title with a plane and falling missiles, and the imprint page
Spread: a large quote beside a wedding invitation for Yael and Yoav with a lemon branch
Spread: a portrait titled with Zehava Ben’s name and her song “Tipat Mazal”, beside the story of the drive to the venue
Spread: an illustration of the couple in yellow and grey, cheek to cheek
Spread: a large quote beside an illustrated wedding cake with sunflowers
Spread: a photograph of an elderly woman seated in a chair, beside a page of text
Spread: an illustration of the couple dancing, beside a page of text

Sakmash

End-of-shift reports, Freddy Lemon, 2017–2020.

A book that sketches a portrait of Jerusalem through my work at Freddy Lemon, a bar in Mahane Yehuda Market. It is built from the unedited WhatsApp “shift summaries” (sakmash, in Hebrew shorthand) sent by the management team, alongside photos, screenshots and memes, and documents the city’s pulse through its nightlife.

Four chapters (Community, Culture, Enforcement and Violence) trace the tensions between intimacy and chaos, authority and freedom, love of place and the urge to escape.

Community

A spread of a security camera still from inside the bar
